Texas Federation of Republican Women

Legislative Day

By Charlie Hamberg

Seventeen years after the formation of the National Federation of Republican Women in 1938, the Texas Federation of Republican Women’s Clubs was organized in October of 1955 in the White Plaza Hotel in San Antonio.

At Legislative Day last week, hosted by the Texas Federation of Republican Women (TFRW), we were able to meet the Texas House of Representatives Republican Freshmen and to learn their stories and goals for this session. Two goals that stood out were border security with an emphasis on drug trafficking and the need for education reform.

The first goal regarding border security and drug trafficking is to pass HB-1581, a Texas house bill dealing with the Fentanyl crisis plaguing the United States. This bill would categorize knowingly selling a drug containing Fentanyl that results in injury or death as a crime. Currently, if a person sells or gives a person a lethal dose of Fentanyl, the provider has no liabilities or legal consequences.

The second goal of this session will be to reclaim the full authority of the SBOE to vet the textbooks that are in our public schools. Currently, Texas educators have guidelines as to what they are allowed to teach. However, the State Board of Education has been restricted for the past 12 years as the gatekeepers that decide what goes into the books from which our teachers are giving lessons. It has been claimed that there are factual inaccuracies or omissions, inappropriate content, and biased opinions being taught as facts that are in our textbooks. Our students cannot excel if the State Board of Education has only 50% authority to police the publishers and their lobbyists. We should support HB-1804 and HB-1822 to restore the effective education of our children.

After hearing from our Republican Freshmen, we were lucky enough that The Honorable John Cornyn, United States Senator for Texas, could join us. He also spoke about border security and Fentanyl.

It was a very informative day, and everyone should visit our Texas Capitol this 88th legislative session prior to adjournment on May 29.
