John – The radical right has been trying to pass a national sales tax for years. But because it's a terrible idea, they've never gotten anywhere with it.

Now, with Kevin McCarthy in charge, they're at it again.

Let's get one thing straight: Oregonians do not support a national sales tax, and we never will. Period. In fact, we've rejected sales tax at the ballot box nine times. And as long as I'm in Congress, you can count on me to vote against it.

Why?

A national sales tax is an attack on poor and working class families. The Republican plan slaps a 30% tax on nearly all essential purchases – including hygiene products, food, clothing, and medicine.

At the same time, the Republican plan eliminates the estate tax, as well as tax on purchases of stocks, bonds, mutual funds, and investments.

The result? The Brookings Institute ran the numbers and found that the current Republican national sales tax plan would cause taxes to rise for 90% of all households. Only those in the highest 10% of incomes would really get a tax cut. Those in the top 1% would receive an average tax cut of over $75,000.

It's as simple as that, John: the national sales tax makes things even harder on the people who are struggling to make ends meet while handing a massive windfall to the wealthiest Americans.

Simply put, it's a bad idea, just like it's always been, and if the radical right brings this to the floor, you can count on me to stand up for America's working families over billionaires like I always have.
