A few months ago, President Trump issued an executive order that gave state and local officials authority to deny refugee resettlement in their communities. HIAS has led the way in suing the federal government to end this state and local refugee ban. And we received some great news this week when a federal judge ruled in our favor to block this attempt to keep refugees out of our communities.

As good as this news is, it is only a temporary setback for the Trump administration, and our work protecting refugees is not done. This order could still prevent refugees from being reunited with their U.S.-based families and block communities with successful resettlement programs from continuing to welcome refugees. At this moment in our country’s history, organizations like HIAS are crucial to ensuring that refugees and asylum seekers are treated with fairness and compassion.
