We’ve seen this before, John.

Tyre Nichols, an unarmed 29-year-old Black man and father, was brutally murdered at the hands of Memphis Police officers after being pulled over for a traffic stop.

The news is rife with the traumatic video of the violent traffic stop, and lots and lots of horrifying details. We won’t repeat them here. The bottom line is this: Tyre Nichols deserved life.

This was state-sanctioned murder, and it didn’t need to happen. No amount of training, diversity courses, or charges will change the culture of militarized policing within a racist justice system. Something has to give.

To properly address gun violence in America, we must confront the ways law enforcement’s brutal targeting of communities of color, particularly Black and brown communities, contributes to gun deaths and injuries. We also have to redefine what safety looks like for our communities — safety without gun violence, police brutality, and militarized policing. We are fighting for a future that invests in our children’s schools, hospitals, community centers, and mental health resources.

To support Tyre Nichols' family, donate to help cover the cost of their mental health services and build a memorial skate park in his honor here >>
