President Rick Levy Explains COPE. Convention Is Ready to Go Next Week - RISE UP! ALL IN!
Across the state, Central Labor Councils have been talking to candidates about the key issues affecting workers like you and making sure they are fighting for Texas working families. The candidates recommended are brought forward to our 2020 COPE Convention to be voted on by union delegates. President Rick Levy reached out to delegates and the general public this week explaining our endorsement process.
UNITE HERE Negotiates Historic Pay Raise for Housekeepers in Two San Antonio Hyatt Hotels
UNITE HERE members at the Grand Hyatt and Hyatt Regency hotels in San Antonio have completed bargaining on a new five-year contract that will make housekeepers the highest-paid working people in that job category in the state.
The contract will raise housekeeping wages to $17 an hour over the next five years.
This is exciting news for the entire Texas labor movement, showing, not far removed from a long struggle for union recognition, how a union contract can deliver real results for low-wage working families. Hats off to UNITE HERE Local 23!
Texas AFL-CIO Women's Summit Opens Registration. Get Your Early Bird Tickets!
The Texas AFL-CIO Women’s Committee invites you to attend the 2nd Women’s Summit on May 1-2, 2020. The event will take place at the TCEA building located on 3100 Alvin Devane Blvd., Building B, Austin, TX 78741.
Under the theme “Empowering Union Women” attendees will connect with women across the state, meet dynamic speakers, share ideas, attend workshops about leadership training: public speaking, organizing, women’s health, equal pay for equal work and mentorship .
Working together, we can build power and build a better Texas for working women. The conference will run Friday, 2 PM - 8 PM and Saturday, 8 AM - 5 PM.
Also, the Texas AFL-CIO will be representing tomorrow, Saturday, January 18th at the Austin Women's March 2020. Secretary-Treasurer, Montserrat Garibay will be a featured speaker in a powerful lineup. Prior to the march to the state capitol, union sisters and brothers are asked to convene at our Texas AFL-CIO headquarters at 11:30am - 1106 Lavaca St., Austin, TX 78701.
Six U.S. Senate Candidates Confirmed for COPE Convention
Six Democratic U.S. Senate candidates have accepted invitations to participate in a debate at the Texas AFL-CIO COPE Convention.
The 90-minute debate will take place 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 25 at the Omni Austin Hotel. Participants will include Chris Bell, Amanda Edwards, MJ Hegar, Sema Hernandez, Cristina Tzintzún Ramirez and Royce West.
The debate is part of a two-day agenda in which COPE (Committee on Political Education) delegates will consider statewide, congressional and legislative endorsements and hold sessions on building power for working families in Texas. Featured speakers confirmed at this time include Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo and national AFL-CIO Executive Vice President Tefere Gebre.

ASARCO Strike Hits 90-Day Mark; Past Time for Fair Contract
Union leaders say the 1,800 striking Asarco workers in Arizona and Texas remain “strong” as the strike entered its fourth month Monday, with little hope of a settlement in sight.
The union has tapped its strike relief fund, and some workers have had to take temporary jobs to help pay the bills. But union leaders and supporters say they are in for the long haul and are getting support from the community that has helped workers cope with the length of the strike. - Read More
