John,
With an extreme, gun-rights majority in the House, our movement must take the fight for gun safety laws to state legislatures across the country this year.
We often hear people say nothing has changed since Parkland, or even since Sandy Hook. But the truth is we’ve made life-saving progress in recent years, passing hundreds of gun violence prevention laws at the state level. If the past few days of violence have reminded us of anything, it’s that we cannot afford to wait for Congress to act as guns terrorize every corner of the country.
Can you chip in today to support our on-the-ground efforts to close deadly gaps in federal gun laws by fighting for commonsense laws in the states?
Following the success of several recent state-level policies, including Illinois’ assault weapons ban and New York’s S.B. S51001, we’ll bring the full force of our movement to communities nationwide eager to end this epidemic.
A few examples of states we’ll be zeroing in on include the following:
- Pennsylvania: With a newly-elected Democratic House majority in the General Assembly, we have a major opportunity to push lawmakers to enact safe and secure storage laws, requiring new handgun models to have childproofing features, funding for services for victims of gun violence, and more.
- Maryland: Thanks to high turnout among young people, Maryland has a Democratic trifecta controlling the state legislature and the governor’s mansion. This provides a clear path for lawmakers to pass meaningful gun safety bills.
- Texas: Since Uvalde, more people have been involved in the gun violence prevention movement. Our approach will focus on doubling down on our efforts to pressure Governor Abbott to hold a regular session and prioritize children’s safety over profits.
- Colorado: The Club Q shooting highlighted the need to strengthen the state’s extreme risk protection law and combat 2nd Amendment sanctuary counties. By growing our network of grassroots supporters and allies, there’s a potential opening to advance gun safety measures.
Now more than ever, statehouses will lead the way for positive action and forward momentum. Until every community is safe and without fear of being shot, we must hold our lawmakers’ feet to the fire and demand they act with the urgency it demands.
A donation of any size helps us mobilize young people in support of critical legislation to save lives. Chip in today >>
Thanks for coming together to save lives and defeat the gun lobby’s “guns everywhere” agenda.
In solidarity,
