MD's new Secretary of Labor drops in on labor lobbyist meeting

One of newly-appointed Maryland Secretary of Labor Portia Wu's first stops was the Maryland/DC state fed's first Labor Lobbyist meeting of the year on Monday. Wu talked about her parents' longtime careers as federal workers and her own work at Microsoft which has had a labor neutrality agreement with CWA since last June. It was noted that Wu's visit was the first time in eight years that a Maryland Secretary of Labor had visited with the state fed and labor leaders, and Wu urged labor to reach out directly to her on their concerns. "The labor family is excited to have someone of Secretary Wu's strong labor background leading the department," said Maryland/DC AFL-CIO President Donna Edwards.

The Maryland/DC AFL-CIO reported at Monday's meeting that although it's still early in the session and many of labor's priority bills have not been released yet, hundreds of bills impacting unions and workers have already been introduced. The state fed has been supporting labor's legislative agenda, including HB2, which would allow union workers to deduct their dues from state income taxes. The Machinists are currently fighting for a bill to grant collective bargaining rights to all library workers statewide. Public sector unions like AFSCME and AFT are working to help close the massive vacancies at state agencies that have left many union members overworked and underpaid.

In Memoriam: NewsGuild's Bruce Raymond Nelson

Bruce Raymond Nelson, 73, died Tuesday, January 10, 2023 in Laurel, MD. Nelson was a NewsGuild staff representative for three decades, starting in 1984 and retiring in 2015. He trained hundreds of members, at sector meetings, district meetings and alongside workers at the bargaining table. "He was very instrumental with Washington Post negotiations for many, many years," said Cet Parks, Washington-Baltimore NewsGuild Executive Director. "In negotiations Bruce would sit there and management would ask him what he thought," he said. "He had the uncanny ability to use the Jedi mind trick on management to think of him as neutral," he said. Nelson helped WBNG secure several agreements. "He was one of a kind," Parks said. "He had this way of resting his fingers on his forehead and troubleshooting several problems at once in his mind," said NewsGuild-CWA President Jon Schleuss. "And then he had so much joy when he saw the collective win to the problem." [link removed] Read more here.

Union Voice/Readers Write: UMWA's real founding

"The UMWA was formed on January 25, 1890, not January 22nd (1/20 UC)," writes United Mine Workers of America Director of Government Affairs Adam Banig.
Our apologies; a duplicate entry had crept into our labor history database. Look for the correct listing below, in Today's Labor History.
