🌹 Public Sector Union Rights Phonebanking
Starts Tonight! 🌹

TONIGHT 1/23 at 6:00 PM: Phonebank for Public Sector Bargaining Rights! ☎️🍎⚒

Atlanta DSA is campaigning for Georgia State legislators to legalize public sector bargaining this legislative session and we need your help! We'll be phonebanking every Monday starting TONIGHT January 23rd gathering petition signatures and encouraging folks to contact their House Reps. Join us at 711 Catherine St. at 6 PM TONIGHT. RSVP here!

All workers deserve the right to unionize and bargain for a better workplace! But most public-sector workers in Georgia — teachers, nurses, university staff, and other government workers — aren't legally allowed to collectively bargain or strike for a fair contract. We can't leave these essential workers behind!

NOTE: For the safety of everyone, we require all event attendees to be fully vaccinated.

Can't make it? Support the campaign by writing your legislators and tell them to

support Union Rights for Public Workers!

🌳 DSA Condemns Killing of Forest Defender 🌳

The Democratic Socialists of America condemns the murder of an Atlanta Forest Defender, Tortuguita, by Georgia State Troopers.

DSA maintains our full support for the democratic rights of all people to peacefully protest this development and defend Atlanta’s public forests from destruction. We condemn attempts by police and the far-right to mischaracterize left-wing activists as “outside agitators” or “domestic terrorists” as those are merely excuses to further criminalize organized efforts to protect our communities.

🌹 Public Sector Workers Need Rights Now! 🌹

The new year brings new opportunities for workers to build power across the South. In Georgia specifically, one such significant opportunity lies in fighting for collective bargaining rights for public sector workers throughout the state.

Right now, under Georgia law, public employees cannot promote, encourage, or participate in any strike and will in fact be terminated if they do. But the right to strike is hugely important because as workers, our power comes from our labor. Therefore, withholding that labor is one of our strongest and most effective methods of control over our employment conditions.

Georgia’s 680,000 public service workers have significant need for the power that would come with collective bargaining rights and the right to strike.

📚 Book Club This Thursday! 📚

Image promoting the Atlanta DSA book club

This Thursday, Jan 26 @ 7 PM, ATL DSA’s book club will read and discuss Chapter 2 of Elite Capture: How the Powerful Took Over Identity Politics (And Everything Else) by Olúfẹ́mi Táíwò.

In this book, Táíwò discusses how the rich and powerful have co-opted identity politics to achieve their own ends. He instead intervenes to suggest how we as socialists can move beyond a "class" vs. "race" binary to reject elitist identity politics in favor of a constructive politics of racial solidarity, and build a better world that works for us all.

Our book club takes place every other Thursday on Zoom and is open to both members and nonmembers! Just RSVP at atldsa.org/bookclub to get the link, and pick up the book at haymarketbooks.org while there’s still a sale 😉

🏥 Free COVID Testing Kits 🏥

The Post Office is providing another round of four free COVID at-home rapid tests for every residential household. Please stay safe this winter by ordering some free at-home tests!

🌹 Join a Committee! 🌹

Atlanta DSA needs your help with our day-to-day programming! Apply to join or volunteer with one of our many Committees below.

Committees are where we organize our events and actions. Ever wonder who writes these emails, plans a canvass, or organizes strike support? A Committee! Most of our organizing happens through our 6 main committees: Electoral, Labor, Education, Communications, Operations, and Membership. Click here for more information on each committee's work.
