This new bill [[link removed]] , Texas Senate bill 147, which would ban citizens of Iran, China, Russia, and North Korea from owning property, represents a new and unconstitutional chapter in the campaign to vilify and strip the rights of individuals of Iranian descent.
Make no mistake, this is a racist, nativist stunt. But with a real chance for passage, it risks doing serious harm and becoming a slippery slope to further discriminatory acts against our community.
Measures like this do nothing to hurt the Islamic Republic or anyone in Iran's government. Federal law already bars members of Iran's government from property ownership. Instead, this bill will punish Iranian green card and visa holders who are here legally and whose only crime is being born Iranian. And it will open up all Iranian Americans in Texas to additional scrutiny, red tape, and discrimination because of their heritage.
Our community must stand up to actions like this that fail to distinguish between the Islamic Republic and ordinary Iranians and Iranian Americans . People must not be punished for the crimes of their government and we must stand up for ourselves against this nativist stunt.
Tell Texas: don’t mess with Iranian Americans! Sign the petition today [[link removed]] >> [[link removed]]
