Corporate Democrats killed our chance to pass a ban on congressional stock trading last year, even though they held the majority. Our take is simple: it’s time to ban members of Congress from unfairly profiting from their roles through trading stocks.

Our representatives were not elected to use insider knowledge for their own financial gain. Here at Justice Democrats, we believe in an actual democracy: where leaders serve their constituents, not their own wallets.

A ban on congressional stock trading is a fair, straightforward, common-sense reform. It should be easy for Democratic leaders to give it their stamp of approval — because it’s overwhelmingly popular.

But instead, corporate Democrats proved once again that they care more about personal interest than representing everyday Americans who make up the 99%. Case in point: just days ago, Nancy Pelosi sold millions of dollars in stocks that she never should have been able to trade in the first place.

Justice Democrats like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Pramila Jayapal were mobilizing enough votes to pass the ban until the Democratic leadership killed it. We need more progressives in office to build our bloc and push crucial policies that will make Congress work for the people again.
