In 2013, the Supreme Court gutted the Voting Rights Act. For the first time since 1965, state and local officials didn't need to clear election law changes with the Justice Department.

Republicans pounced. They closed thousands of polling places, purged hundreds of thousands of voters, passed onerous voter ID laws, and gerrymandered districts for partisan gain. All these measures heavily targeted voters of color.

That's why the House of Representatives passed the Voting Rights Advancement Act, which will restore the power of the Voting Rights Act. Now, it's in the Senate.

Rural communities of color and Native American reservations have been hit especially hard by unchecked voter suppression.

In North Dakota, new voter ID laws specifically exclude tribal IDs. Only IDs with street addresses were accepted, disenfranchising thousands of rural reservation residents who don't have traditional street addresses.

And since 2013, over 1,600 polling places have closed, many in majority-black Southern rural areas, dramatically increasing travel time to polling places.

The Six PAC supports progressives running in rural communities. Help us fight for equal access to the ballot box.
