I had to reread the news a couple of times to make sure I was understanding it correctly:

House Republicans are proposing a nationwide 30 percent sales tax on everything from groceries to gasoline. They want to raise taxes on working-class and middle-class families while slashing them for millionaires and billionaires.

Really? Really? Are they TRYING to show exactly how out of touch they are?

I’m going to fight this every step of the way. Add your name to say you oppose the GOP’s plan to give tax breaks to the rich on the backs of working people. [[link removed]]

House Republicans aren’t just pursuing a deeply damaging policy — they’re also trying to pull the wool over our eyes.

See, they keep claiming that a 30 percent sales tax wouldn’t be so bad (I can’t even type that with a straight face) because it would replace all federal income and payroll taxes. But you know who spends a higher share of their income at corner stores, grocery markets, and other retailers? The working class and the middle class. All told, after crunching all the numbers, they’d end up paying more. You know who’d get a big fat tax break? Millionaires and billionaires.

Look: There are plenty of ways we need to reform our tax system. But let’s start with getting the ultra-rich to pay their fair share, which includes my plan for a wealth tax on fortunes greater than $50 million. Let’s build on the progress we made last year with the Inflation Reduction Act, which included both a crackdown on wealthy tax cheats, and my minimum tax on giant corporations to ensure they pay a fairer share. Let’s close the loopholes that lobbyists have left in the tax code, which now looks a lot like Swiss cheese.

And let’s NOT increase the price of everything from eggs and milk to houses and college tuition by 30 percent.

The Republican congressman who introduced this scheme had some oh-so-helpful advice: “If you don't want to pay a tax, don’t buy it. It's as simple as that.” Sure thing: It’s as simple as deciding not to buy diapers or pay health insurance premiums. Give me a break.

Every day, the GOP makes it clear that they work for the rich and powerful, at everyone else’s expense. We need to make it clear that we’re fighting back for a country that works for everyone.

Add your name to say you’re in this fight against the House GOP’s proposed national sales tax — and let’s stop it side by side. [[link removed]]

Thanks for being a part of this,

Elizabeth
