It's a new year, with new local leaders, (and new committee assignments!) and we can't wait to get started.

But first, a huge thank you to the 111 people that helped us skate through our year-end fundraising goal! You all helped us raise $12,662 (thats almost 30% more than we hoped!) to support our vision of a Washington region where housing is abundant and affordable, it’s easy and safe to get around without a car, and land use decisions center racial, economic, and environmental justice.

If you missed your chance to donate, never fear! There's always room for more in our Neighborhood.

A Public Information Session on ANC Processes

Saturday, January 21, 2:00 pm - 3:30 pm

Join Greater Greater Washington for a public information session via Zoom on how Advisory Neighborhood Commissions operate and what District residents should expect when interacting with their commissioners. GGWash Executive Director (and former ANC 1D05 Commissioner) Chelsea Allinger will discuss how ANCs operate, drawing on her past experience, alongside Alex Baca, GGWash's D.C. Policy Director, who will address how the public can effectively engage with their ANCs. The session will include time for questions and answers. This event is open to members of the public. There is no cost to attend. Details to join the Zoom meeting will be sent upon registration, and the meeting will be recorded and shared. Email D.C. Ward 1.5 meet-up

Sunday, January 22, 3:00 pm - 5:00 pm

Civic engagement can be both rewarding and frustrating, but it should never be lonely. If you’re looking to connect with other folks—especially in Wards 1 and 2—who think neighbors are nicer than neighborhood character and that cities should be for people, not for cars, come out on January 22 at 3 pm for this month’s meet-up at Grand Duchess in Adams Morgan.

Testify in support of missing middle housing in Arlington

It is currently illegal to build apartments in most of Arlington County. However, after two years of public engagement and policy evaluation, the Arlington County Board could end exclusionary zoning. The YIMBYs of Northern Virginia are recruiting folks to testify in support at the public hearing on Saturday, January 21. RSVP to get more information about how to register to speak, talking points, and what to expect during the public hearing.

Join the Montgomery County Planning Board 

Last fall, everyone resigned from Montgomery County’s planning board. After appointing a temporary, caretaker board, the County Council is looking for new members. In related news: have you considered applying for the Montgomery County Planning Board? The deadline is January 20 at 5 PM!

Apply to be a 2023 Transformative Justice Infrastructure Fellow

The Communities First Infrastructure Alliance is looking for infrastructure-related public sector practitioners (transportation, water, housing, environment) to participate in their 2023 Fellowship program to support public sector leaders to working to embed justice and equity in their approaches to local infrastructure investments. The deadline is January 20 at 11:59 PM! 

Sign WABA's petition for a bikeway connecting Eckington and Dupont Circle.

Earlier this month, GGWash contributors Matthew Holden and Richard Stirba did a deep data dive to expose a hole–and an opportunity–in DDOT’s infrastructure plan. If you believe that protected bike infrastructure is needed on Q & R Streets, make sure to sign WABA's petition. 

Become a Breakfast Links Curator (alternate)

Our Breakfast Links Curators kickstart each day at GGWash, working with our editors to select six to 10 engaging stories that provide a snapshot of recent local urbanist news. We've filled all of our regular breakfast links slots, and now we're looking for alternates! If you want to help us out but can't commit to a regular weekly shift, this is your moment.
