Join the Protesters for Israeli Democracy Virtually

Last Saturday I stood in the rain outside the Habima Theater in Tel Aviv with 100,000 other people protesting the Israeli government’s planned neutering of the judicial system. If adopted, this package of legislation will remove checks on government power and endanger the rights of minorities and vulnerable populations within society, along with Palestinians subject to Israeli military rule. As a lifelong Zionist who identifies strongly with the ideals expressed in Israel’s Declaration of Independence, I am deeply concerned about the future viability of the Zionist dream - a democratic homeland for the Jewish people.

Ameinu aligns strongly with the broad protest movement in Israel which includes Jews and Arabs, young and old, citizens who live in the large cities and those who reside in the periphery…in short the spectrum of Israeli society. Politically this movement includes people from the left, center and right; they may disagree on other issues but they share a belief in a strong judiciary to ensure legal protection for all citizens.

Our colleagues at Ameinu Canada are part of a coalition of organizations that are co-sponsoring an in-person demonstration on Saturday in Toronto and an opportunity to join virtually. They have invited Ameinu members in the U.S. to participate virtually at 7:00 PM EST by clicking here.

The entire announcement from Ameinu Canada appears below.

Thank you,

Kenneth Bob

President, Ameinu

Join us, our friends at JSpaceCanada, and other partners this Saturday for a solidarity vigil.

Last Saturday morning many of us watched the live broadcasts from rainy Tel Aviv from across Canada with our hands on our hearts.

Listening to the speakers and watching the nearly 100,000 participants at Habima Square, so many of us felt a sense of hope and solidarity.

Many of our friends and family participated in smaller rallies in Jerusalem and in Haifa.

Across Canada and around the world so many of us are holding their breath for the future of Israel’s democracy.

We invite you to join us at an in person and virtual rally this Saturday, January 21 at 7pm EST in solidarity with more than half of Israel’s citizens protesting against the current government and the changes it is proposing to make to Israel’s judicial system.
