VOTE THIS WEEK FOR DSAers & OTHER PROGRESSIVES FOR CA DEM. CENTRAL COMMITTEE
Hi again, Sacramento DSA comrades.
Last
month we sent a message urging you to register for a mail-in ballot for
the ADEM elections, happening now to elect 1/3 of the state Democratic
Party Central Committee. If you did, you should have received your
ballot last week. If not, or if you didn't get around to applying, you can still vote in person this weekend.
DSA members are sprinkled among slates and/or lists of true progressive candidates, so let's support them!
For a reminder as to why this matters, here's a good explanation posted by our allies in the Progressive Delegate Network, whose endorsements we recommend (see below).
One
way or the other, make sure your ballot gets in! Keep reading for
instructions in the process we suspect was deliberately designed to be
confusing!
Finally, please pass this on to other friends, relatives, neighbors to increase our chances.
Where, when and how to vote.
- A
confirmation email you should have received after you requested a mail
ballot in December came with a PIN (participant ID number) that you need
to enter on your ballot. If you didn't jot it down you can get it by
using the Find My PIN link
on the party's ADEM website. Complete the ballot, put it in the
envelope, stick on a stamp and mail by Jan. 24 to make sure it arrives
by the Jan. 31 deadline. (Alternatively, you can also bring it to any
voting site during its open hours.)
-
You can also vote by simply showing up at any voting site, registering and getting a PIN and a ballot there. Sacramento area polling places are listed and mapped at https://www.adem.cadem.org/where-to-vote (off
the same home page). For sites in our area, click Districts 4 (Davis), 5
(Granite Bay), 6 (downtown Sac.), 7 (Citrus Heights) and/or 10 (Elk
Grove). Each will be open on either Saturday 1/21 or Sunday 1/22 for
four hours -- times vary.
Find the place, date and time that's best for you.
- Will you be
traveling out of the area this weekend? You can vote anywhere in the
state -- use the website to find a good place, but note that some
operated Jan. 7-8 and won't be open again.
- We recommended that you register in advance here and
get a PIN in case of glitches or long lines in the rain. The form is
picky: Name and address must be entered as on the voter roll (You can
check that here.)
Birthdate must be MM/DD/YYYY. No hyphens, spaces or parentheses in the
phone number. Check for typos. If you have any problem, people on site
should be able to solve it.
- If you're not registered to vote, or not as a Democrat, you can register/re-register online (print
a copy of your confirmation) or even at the voting site (barring
Internet glitches). Change to something else next month if you wish.
Voting by mail or in person:
- It's the same Scantron ballot in every district, whether you're voting by mail or in person.
- Be sure to complete both sides -- one with your PIN (write the numbers and
fill in the circles), the other side with numbers corresponding to your
chosen candidates for your district. Fill in up to 14 -- no more.
-
Note that the ballot does not show names.
This was apparently done so the same ballot could be used in all
districts. You can find the numbers for all candidates in your district
at https://www.adem.cadem.org/candidates. Candidate statements are there too, if submitted. The first two digits of your PIN are your Assembly district number, or you can look it up here, using your registration address.
DSA's voting recommendations:
- Find Progressive Delegate Network endorsements at pdn.vote -- and please vote for all of them. Almost all DSA member candidates are included.
- In
some districts, teams of local progressive organizers have gotten
together and formed mutually supportive slates of up to 14 candidates --
sometimes including a few who are not on the PDN list for various
reasons too complicated to spell out. In three of our local
districts, the Progressive Alliance is such a collaborative effort. You can see their slate cards online, with candidate ballot numbers, for District 6, District 7 and District 10. Please vote for all of them too.
- You'll
probably also be handed printed slate cards by supporters at the
polling places -- but for the site's AD, not necessarily yours, so don't
get confused.
-
BEWARE of slates with names or pitches
that include the overused word "progressive." It doesn't necessarily
mean much. We've recently caught wind of purported "pro-labor" slates
using the name CADEM4All. They're mostly a product of the party's
pro-corporate establishment, and they included some PDN endorsees
without asking their permission. If you're not sure, stick with the PDN endorsees.
- If you live in District 4 in Yolo County or 5 in the eastern suburbs, let PDN be your guide, but feel free to ask around among other comrades you trust for other possible recommendations.
That's it. Thanks, and onward!
