“I just want to do God's will. And He's allowed me to go up to the mountain. And I've looked over. And I've seen the Promised Land. I may not get there with you. But I want you to know tonight, that we, as a people, will get to the promised land!” — Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Dear John,

Today we recognize the legacy of reverend, activist, and civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. While in some ways we have come far in the years since Dr. King’s work for equality and justice, we are still far from the mountaintop. But we march on, and we will get there.

The same issues and injustices that Dr. King worked to resolve — civil rights, voter suppression, war, poverty, housing, workers’ rights, and more — are still glaring upon our country. Our right to vote is still under attack, affordable housing is disappearing, and in the richest nation in the world, almost 1 in 7 Georgians still live in poverty.

So on this day, I urge you not to just reflect on Dr. King’s work as some kind of distant history. Instead, hear his words as fresh guidance on the ongoing movement that we are a part of.

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s message of nonviolence and compassion is as relevant today as it was during his lifetime. Let us recommit ourselves to his life’s work to bring people together to build one ‘Beloved Community’ at peace with itself.

From Dr. King’s involvement in the Albany Movement — right here in the district I live in and represent — to the March on Washington, he rooted his commitment to civil rights on his faith. And as a religious man myself, my faith guides my commitment to civil rights, equality, and justice in my community, too.

Together, we will reach the mountaintop.
