Friends,
On this day, I am reflecting on the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and what our democracy is doing – or not doing – to live up to his ideals.
Last year on this date, I was fighting to pass comprehensive voting rights legislation in the Senate. We couldn’t get it done due to an antiquated rule which was originally used to block civil rights legislation – the filibuster.
But this year, I'm hopeful.
I’m hopeful because last year, folks across the country turned out in record numbers to defeat candidates peddling Donald Trump’s Big Lie, extremists who wanted to attack our right to vote, radicals who spent more time trying to divide us than address the real challenges we face.
So I'm going to keep fighting. We may have fallen short before, but with Republicans fighting to pass laws to make it harder to vote, continuing to disproportionately suppress African American votes, and even trying to undermine free and fair elections, it’s up to us to keep working to ensure everyone has a voice.
Our most sacred rights are always worth fighting for. As Dr. King said in his historic “Give us the ballot” speech: “Keep moving. Let nothing slow you up. Move on with dignity and honor and respectability.”.
Today and every day, I’m remembering Dr. King’s words of encouragement. And I’m ready to keep moving with dignity and honor and respectability towards protecting the right to vote for all Americans and preventing bad faith efforts to marginalize African American voters in particular. Because the stakes are too high for us to sit this out.
I hope you’ll join me in the fight. Add your name today to say you’ll never stop fighting for our democracy, our most sacred of rights, and true equality in this nation. [[link removed]]

It’s up to all of us to follow in the footsteps of Dr. King and truly achieve a more perfect union.
Together, I know that we can. And we simply must.
Thanks,
