Dear John,

Today we commemorate the birth of Martin Luther King Jr., born 94 years ago, just a few hours south of Knoxville. The grandson of sharecroppers and clergy, he was born into an America rife with division, hatred and state sanctioned violence against its Black population. Yet guided by his family, his conscience and his faith, Dr. King became a universal embodiment of courage, perseverance, dignity and service. His invocation for racial equality and economic justice continues to inspire us to empower the disenfranchised and lift up our most vulnerable.

I hope all Knoxvillians will take time to honor Martin Luther King’s mission and sacrifice by performing acts of service for those in need as well as considering how to make our city and our world more inclusive and more equitable.

In his final address, Martin Luther King issued the following call to action: “ Let us rise up tonight with a greater readiness. Let us stand with a greater determination. And let us move on in these powerful days, these days of challenge to make America what it ought to be.”

With appreciation for all you do,
Indya
