House Republicans are already dysfunctional

Hey John – If you haven’t been following the news closely, you might have missed the hot mess caused by House Republicans last week. Despite having a majority, it took House Republicans 15 tries before they finally elected Kevin McCarthy as Speaker – putting Congress at a standstill for almost a whole week.

Let me break down this highly atypical situation: You need a majority of votes (218) to be elected Speaker of the House, and typically the party in power decides who they’ll elect ahead of time. However, through dysfunction and extremism, Republicans could not agree on who to choose. The last time this happened was 100 years ago.

John, this is a very bad sign for how things will function under Republican control. We’re preparing ourselves for more partisan gridlock than ever before, and it’s critical for the future of our democracy to gear up for the battles ahead. Will you chip into my campaign to help me build Democratic power in the House?

DONATE NOW

Now I can’t tell you what was being said behind closed doors in their meetings, but I do know that the House of Representatives came to a complete standstill last week due to the GOP’s squabbling. No members could be sworn in and no laws could be passed. Basically, none of us could do the jobs we were elected to do.

The American people deserve better from our elected representatives. Some of us in Congress are here to get things done, and we just had our hands tied for several days last week.

I know it seems far away, but it’s never too early to look ahead to 2024 and consider how we can flip the House back to Democratic control. If you’re with us, please pitch in so we can cut the BS and start passing legislation to help our constituents.

Thanks, John.
