Hi John — My name is Rachel Jacoby, Organizer for March For Our Lives. I wanted to reach out to give you an exciting update happening on the ground!
Illinois Governor JB Pritzker just signed the Protect Illinois Communities Act into law — transformative legislation that bans assault weapons and protects our communities from the constant threat of gun violence. 🎉
A couple of key components of the lifesaving bill include:
- ✅ Banning the manufacture, sale, possession, and delivery of assault-style weapons
- ✅ Banning rapid fire devices and high-capacity magazines
- ✅ Extending the duration of a firearm restraining order from six months to a year
- ✅ Addresses illegal firearm trafficking
Over the past few months, I’ve spoken to hundreds of young people, across Illinois and the nation, who are tired of inaction and ready for bold gun safety reform. We have no choice because gun violence robbed us of our innocence and remains the leading cause of death for young people.
Together, we fought day in and day out to get this bill across the finish line, successfully making Illinois the ninth state to ban assault weapons. This comprehensive bill is a HUGE step forward for the gun violence prevention movement and a testament to the hard work we’ve put into pressuring lawmakers to take action.
Thanks for showing up and supporting our fight to live in a country that puts our lives ahead of the gun lobby’s profits.
The power of everyday people using our voices to advocate for change, as we did at anti-gun violence rallies last summer, has shown me that we are more powerful than anyone trying to silence us.
In solidarity,
Rachel Jacoby
