Friend,

Two years ago today marked one of the darkest days of the history of our democracy.

On January 6th, 2021, right-wing insurrectionists — incited by hate and misinformation — violently attempted to prevent a peaceful transfer of power. The consequences were deadly, and serve as a powerful reminder of the fragility of our democracy.

But I will forever be inspired by what happened next. Later that evening, Congress reconvened. We came together on the House floor to perform our sacred duty to the nation by certifying the results of the 2020 election.

The violence did not deter Congress from doing our job, and the political attacks in the years since haven’t derailed the bipartisan January 6th select committee’s efforts to pursue a fair, thorough investigation of the events leading up to that day.

Today, I am thinking of the brave Capitol Police officers who defended the Capitol on January 6th, and all those who work tirelessly to keep us safe. I also want to acknowledge the January 6th committee’s historic work in the pursuit of justice and truth, so we can prevent an attack like this from ever happening again.

Two years later, it’s clear that our democracy is still fragile. However, we remain determined to protect it with all our might.

Thank you for being in this fight with me.

Together,

Deborah
