From bad lip reading videos to goofy rumors, there’ve been a lot of funny
moments from this week's Speaker fiasco.

But here’s what’s not funny — four days and twelve votes later, we
still don’t have a House of Representatives. Until a Speaker is chosen,
new Members can’t get sworn in — that slows constituent services and even
payment for some federal staff.

Make no mistake, for many of these conservatives, the chaos is the point.
They’ve shown, time and again, that they have no respect for our
democratic institutions. They want government to fail. This week is making
it clear: we’re going to have to work harder than ever to get even basic

You're probably hearing a bit about the chaos in the House of
Representatives. 

And you may be wondering why Alexandria was captured on CSPAN speaking to
the likes of far-right congressmen Matt Gaetz and Paul Gosar. Here's
what's happening.

After Republicans won the House majority in the midterm elections,
Representative Kevin McCarthy (who previously served as House minority
leader) was the supposed frontrunner to be elected Speaker of the House by
his Republican colleagues. 

But after six rounds of votes over two days, it’s become clear that Kevin
McCarthy does not have the votes, and no speaker has been elected. That
means Congress can’t formally convene, can’t consider other business,
can’t staff committees, can’t do ANYTHING.  

We don’t know what’s going to happen next but we do know that this doesn’t
bode well for life under Republican control. They can create chaos that
makes it impossible to govern. In fact, for many of them that’s their

So what were Gosar and Alexandria talking about?

Rep. McCarthy led many Republican defectors to believe Democrats would
help put McCarthy over the edge — but that was not true. 

When Gaetz and Gosar approached Alexandria on the House floor to ask about
McCarthy’s claim that some Democrats might leave or vote present so
McCarthy would need fewer overall votes she let them know: there are NO
cracks in this Democratic coalition. And we won't be bailing out the
Republicans from their own mess.

There’s going to be a lot of twists and turns over the next couple days,
