John, Two years ago today, a group of violent insurrectionists stormed our nation’s Capitol to overturn the 2020 election and upend our democracy.
It's easy to think of the insurrection as a single, isolated attack on our democracy. But coordinated efforts have been unfolding against our right to vote and to free and fair elections – the foundation of our democracy – long before that dark day.
We are seeing these efforts play out right here in the Iowa Senate. Just last year, Republican politicians successfully passed an ultra-restrictive voting rights law limiting early voting and polling location hours. They are actively attempting to dismantle our democracy and strip away our democratic rights. We cannot allow this kind of dangerous extremism to prevail in Iowa. I am proud to work alongside my colleagues in the Iowa Senate Democrats every day to defend the future of our democracy against right-wing politicians who threaten our right to safe and fair elections.
