John,
Two years ago, at the direction of then-President Trump, the US Capitol was attacked by a violent mob of rioters seeking to prevent Congress from fulfilling our constitutional obligation to certify the results of a free and fair presidential election. I was on the House floor as they tried to break down the doors to violently upend our democracy. I will never forget that day.
This was one of the worst attacks on our democracy in American history, and I’ll admit that I am still shaken by what happened.
I didn’t know if I’d get the chance to see my family again. I remain incredibly grateful for the efforts of rank and file Capitol and DC Metro Police officers who risked, and in some cases, sacrificed their lives protecting me, my colleagues, and our democracy.
Since January 6, 2021, I’ve said that the biggest divide in our politics right now is not between Republicans and Democrats but between those who still believe in our democracy and those who don’t.
Passing the Electoral Count Act was a good step to protect our democracy but we must do more. As we move forward into this new year, it is my sincere hope to work alongside my colleagues on both sides of the aisle who believe in our democracy, so we never again see what happened two years ago repeated.
Thank you, and God bless America.
