Friends,

Today marks two years since the January 6th insurrection, a day that forever lives in infamy in our nation's history. Police officers were trampled, our Capitol was overrun, and our democracy was forced to the brink – simply because Donald Trump refused to accept the results of the 2020 election.

In order to hold Trump and his henchmen accountable for this heinous assault on our Capitol, my colleagues on the January 6th Committee conducted a nearly two-year comprehensive and bipartisan investigation to find out exactly what happened in the lead up to, during, and after the attack. And the findings are clear:

Trump and his closest advisors knew full well that the conspiracies they were spreading about the 2020 election had the potential to incite violence on January 6th, but they did nothing as insurrectionists stormed the Capitol.

As if that weren’t bad enough, Trump and his allies have spent much of the last two years trying to whitewash the attack, distancing themselves from their part in the plot, and undermining the ability of investigators to bring the perpetrators to justice.

But thanks to the steadfast commitment of my colleagues on the January 6th Committee, truth prevailed . Last month, the committee unanimously agreed to refer criminal charges against Trump to the Justice Department, including conspiracy to defraud the United States and inciting or assisting an insurrection – marking the first time that Congress has ever referred a sitting or former president for prosecution.

This historic decision is proof that the foundation of our democracy held strong. And it’s evidence that there are still individuals in both parties with the courage to put their oath to the Constitution over their own personal or political ambitions. As we commemorate this anniversary today, I am deeply grateful to the January 6th Committee members for their tireless work.

Finally, I hope you’ll take a moment to join me in honoring the Capitol Police officers who put their lives on the line to defend our democracy on January 6th, the investigators who’ve worked tirelessly to uncover the facts in the two years since, and the Justice Department officials who continue working to hold the perpetrators accountable.

Thank you,

Lori Trahan
