In case the breathless reports
coming out of the House today are too much for anyone to follow (trust
me, I get it) -- I wanted to give you some context on what's
happening. Regardless of the outcome, here's what our team
sees:
My dad - who is a veteran of more
of these fights than anyone I know - had this to say: "Unlike
legislative disagreements, leadership fights leave scars that never
fully heal. Good luck trying to govern after today, House
Republicans."
This is exactly it. It's the "Chaos
Congress" driven by the craziest of the crazy. It's going to be two
years of insanity. But I would add one point to my dad's analysis of
the deep fractures in the GOP House Caucus:
This
version of the GOP was never interested in governing.
Mark my words: There is going to be
breathless both-sides coverage of the 118th Congress until the 119th
is sworn in. And it is doing our country zero good. This is not a
clash of ideals on what kind of tax policy or health care is best for
our country. It is a bare-knuckle brawl for power - and given
Democratic control of the White House and Senate, all the GOP can do
is cause chaos -- it is a brawl that is not going to end well for
America.
Do you, reading this email, think
letting Lauren Boebert fire the Speaker on a whim is a good idea? What
about letting MTG, Gaetz, and others have their own private lawsuit
power? That's what the crazies are asking for in their "negotiations."
Not policy. Not representing their constituents. Personal power to
take this thing off a cliff and try to hang it around Joe Biden's
neck.
No matter who wins this leadership
fight, our country loses -- because half of Congress, give or take a
few votes, is no longer interested in doing the job they're all
cashing checks to do.
This is our fight for the next two
years. We need you in it.
Because as I said, there is going
to be a lot of convenient forgetting come next fall when it comes to
what is happening now. They will do nothing for our country. They will
claim credit for Joe Biden's accomplishments when convenient. And do
whatever it takes to get votes and power.
As for Kevin McCarthy? Let's see
how swearing into the mic and walking away's gonna go for him. Even if
he wins, he's already lost.
