No gift is too small to make a difference

Dear John,

Debbie, a single mother of one, needs your help to transform her life.

Will you give today to help Debbie and her child thrive in 2023?

Managing to get through the pandemic with a toddler was hard enough. Debbie thought things were finally turning around. She had a new job. Paychecks were coming in and she had just found a great daycare. She never thought she'd lose her home.

One day she had a headache that wouldn’t go away. Her throat felt so itchy and then the coughing started. After testing positive, her symptoms lingered. She took so many sick days (days without pay), that she started to fall behind on bills.

She and her daughter Zoe have been living at NVFS’ shelter for more than four months. It has taken time, but Debbie is starting to believe in a new future for herself. Every day she is reminded of how this community cares about her and her daughter's future.

Debbie has a renewed spirit. She is reviewing her savings plan with her NVFS caseworker and discussing budgets and the goals she has for herself and Zoe. She has a new job now, but she wants greater stability, so she and her caseworker talk to the career specialist at the shelter to see what is possible.

Debbie wants the same things we all do. A safe place to raise her daughter. A place to decorate and make her own. Choices. You — the helpers, the givers, the protectors—can support her on this journey.

Together we can ensure that Debbie, Zoe, and the ones yet to walk through our doors will find a safe place to rebuild and restart.

With gratitude,

Kathleen McMahon
