Hi there --

It’s Nicole Gill, the Executive Director of Accountable Tech. Let me be candid about why I’m sending you this email today:

Non-profit advocacy organizations like ours rely on a surge of giving at the end of the year to help sustain us. Our work is made possible with donations from individual supporters during the end-of-the-year push. So, during this crucial time, I’m asking for your help [[link removed]] . But before I do, let me highlight three reasons why the work we’re doing at Accountable Tech is so important right now:

1.
As
a
founding
member
of
the
#StopToxic
Twitter
coalition,
we’re
leading
the
charge
to
hold
Elon
Musk
and
Twitter
accountable
by
urging
advertisers
to
use
their
leverage
to
demand
a
safer
platform
for
their
brands
and
users.
Major
advertisers
like
Audi,
Chipotle,
General
Mills,
Ford,
Jeep,
Macy's,
Pfizer,
United,
and
many
others
have
stopped
advertising
on
the
platform
in
response.
2.
We’ve
stepped
up
our
advocacy
to
call
on
Meta
to
keep
Donald
Trump
off
Facebook
when
his
two-year
suspension
expires
on
January
7,
2023.
We’re
headed
into
the
new
year
with
a
campaign
to
hold
Meta
accountable
if
the
company
fails
to
to
adhere
to
its
own
policies
and
standards.
3.
Earlier
this
month,
we
dropped
off
a
big
stack
of
160,000+
petition
signatures
to
Google’s
DC
headquarters,
calling
on
Google
to
stop
unnecessarily
collecting
and
retaining
customer
location
data,
which
could
be
used
by
right-wing
state
governments
to
prosecute
people
seeking
abortions.
Location
tracking
is
just
one
component
of
“surveillance
advertising”

where
Big
Tech
companies
are
invading
our
privacy
and
collecting
as
much
information
as
possible
about
their
biggest
product:
our
time
and
attention.

We are headed into 2023 full steam ahead on these important advocacy efforts to hold Big Tech companies accountable for fueling the spread of hate and extremism and undermining our democracy. But we need your help, folks. If you are able to, please make an end-of-year donation to help us hit our end-of-year goal of 200 donations by clicking here: [[link removed]]

Accountable Tech
Democracy depends on common truths. Social media giants are eroding our consensus reality and pushing democracy to the brink. Accountable Tech is fighting back by urging social media companies to serve the public good by strengthening the integrity of their platforms and our democracy.
