John,
As we head toward the new year, I want to wish you and yours a happy holiday season.

I'm spending some much-needed time with family, reflecting on the whirlwind that 2022 was, and looking forward to the opportunity to serve my community in Congress in 2023.

It's hard to believe that it's been more than six weeks since election night. And things haven't slowed down since November 8th - the weekend after the election I was on a plane to DC for new member orientation, a chance to meet my new colleagues from across the country and get a crash course in setting up my office.

I will never forget the moment that I stepped onto the floor of the House of Representatives for the first time. It was a moving experience as I realized that - because of your support - I will be a member of Congress and serve in this august body like so many other great American leaders before me. It is both a great honor and a great responsibility, one that I don't take lightly. I will work every single day to serve in this role to the best of my ability.

I won't know my committee assignments for the 118th United States Congress until the new year, but I'm preparing my policy agenda and I'm very much already at work. It's a lot to take in and I'm fortunate to have some tremendous staff support. Karmen Fore , who has extensive experience in both state and federal policy, will be my Chief of Staff. Dan Whelan will continue in his role as state director for the district office and I am fortunate that most of the talented people who worked for Congressman Peter DeFazio will be staying on with my office to ensure a smooth transition for the 4th District.

Peter DeFazio stood out in Congress for many reasons, not the least of which was his attention to constituent service and his willingness to fight for the people in his district. I'm committed to maintaining Peter's focus on making sure that every corner of this district is having their priorities heard and their needs addressed. I'm also committed to being a strong voice for infrastructure investments here in our part of the state.

Developing the deep water container port in Coos Bay remains a top priority, along with securing expedited funding to replace the seismically unstable dams that supply water to the City of Newport and expanding broadband access throughout the district. We also have a number of smaller projects across the district that I'll be fighting for, like repairing the 42nd street levy in Springfield, that will make a big difference for local residents and businesses.

I'll have a lot more to share with you in the new year, and I hope you'll continue to read these updates so I can keep you in the loop on the latest developments in Congress and the work I'm doing for the 4th District.

For now, from my family to yours, best wishes for the holiday season and a happy and healthy new year.

All the best,

Val
