While it goes without saying that plastic is an extremely common material used in nearly everything we touch, that doesn’t mean factories can just pump out more plastic without addressing the impact their byproducts have on environmental justice and climate change.

Communities of color and low-income communities are disproportionately located near these plastic production factories, and as a result, they are dealing with avoidable health-related issues caused by the air and water pollution produced by these factories.

Not only that, but the greenhouse gas emissions created while making plastic are harming our already fragile climate.

And we can’t ignore the fact that over half of all plastic is created for single-use purposes, such as water bottles, resulting in millions of pounds of plastic ending up in our oceans every year.

Our climate and our communities deserve better, which is why I’m proud to have introduced the Protecting Communities from Plastics Act.

This legislation will help turn around the plastic pollution crisis by establishing stricter rules for plastic production factories to keep our environment and communities clean and healthy.

It also will help our nation shift away from single-use plastics and emphasize reusing instead of wasting. The bottom line is: We must curb the ever-increasing pollution of our planet and protect our environment and public health.

This will be a big step in protecting our climate and communities for years to come, John. Can you join me in supporting this legislation by signing on to be a citizen co-sponsor today?
