Greg Abbott, the Texas governor, signed SB 8 into law in 2021—a vigilante-enforced ban on abortion that went into effect before the fall of Roe and resulted in numerous copycat bills across the country.
And out on the would-be 2024 campaign trail, Mike Pence continues to make controlling pregnant people’s bodies a cornerstone of his political career, recently stating, "Our work must also go far beyond simply working to make abortion illegal. We must continue to work to make it unthinkable."
Meanwhile in Florida, Ron DeSantis was one of the first MAGA Republican governors to oversee the enactment of a ban on abortion starting at 15 weeks of pregnancy—even before the Supreme Court’s Dobbs decision.
Brett Kavanaugh and Amy Coney Barrett, two of the Supreme Court’s newest recruits, eagerly awaited their opportunity to strike down the constitutional right to abortion.
And, of course, Donald Trump—the de facto head of the Republican Party, MAGA original, and the guy who put Kavanaugh and Barrett on the bench in the first place—deserves top billing on any list of anti-choice leaders.
