Alexandria will not vote for more defense spending when there are millions
of working families who cannot afford basic needs. Period.

While the Pentagon continues to receive unfettered funding, Alexandria is
fighting for housing, education, and a dignified way of life for all. It’s
why she has never voted for a defense budget in her life.

And that didn’t change last week, when the House authorized $858 billion
in defense spending — $45 billion more than President Biden originally
requested, and the largest defense budget ever passed.

For reference:

* The entire U.S. Department of Education budget is $88.3 billion –
nearly 90% less than the defense budget^1
* For roughly $90 billion per year, we could permanently extend the
Child Tax Credit to children of lowest-income families who do not
qualify, and cut child poverty in half ^2
* It would cost $20 billion to end homelessness in our country^3

Alexandria put it plainly when asked about her “no” vote:

“The defense budget is notoriously unaccountable. Congress regularly
shovels billions more into the defense budget beyond what the President
even asks for — which is already too much. The lack of financial oversight
is shocking. We do not audit defense spending, and the standards here fall
FAR below the financial standards required of healthcare, education,
housing, and other investments.”

even if it means she’ll face scrutiny. If you support Alexandria’s vote,
can you please chip in $3 to our campaign to show your solidarity?

The Department of Defense only began annual audits in 2018, and has failed
every audit since.^4 Last year, one of the audits findings was that the
Pentagon was price gouged for spare parts to the tune of $20.8 million.
The result was profits of 3,850.6% for defense contractor TransDigm.^5

If TransDigm sounds familiar, it may be because in 2019 Alexandria and the
House Committee on Oversight and Reform helped uncover that TransDigm
scammed $16.1 million in price-gouged profits from the public — and they
successfully forced TransDigm to return it.^6

[ [link removed] ]If you’re able to, please chip in $3 today to support Alexandria’s work to
bring economic justice to working people, rather than line defense
contractors pockets.

In solidarity,

Team AOC
