John,

Last week, I cast what should have been an unnecessary vote. I voted to uphold marriage equality.

Why should my vote have been unnecessary? Because the Supreme Court has already ruled in favor of protecting same-sex and interracial marriages across the country. It’s binding precedent. But as we’ve seen from our activist right-wing SCOTUS majority when they overturned Roe v. Wade, they don’t feel particularly bound by precedent.

So Congress took action, because we can no longer trust the Supreme Court to uphold Americans’ long-established rights.

Congress can take more action by passing my slate of court reforms to stop the right-wing court in its tracks, expanding the court, mandating term limits, and creating a code of ethics. Will you sign my petition demanding the court stop its attack on Americans’ rights?

Justice Clarence Thomas signaled in his concurring opinion in the Dobbs case overturning reproductive rights that marriage equality was next on the menu. This week, when President Biden signed marriage equality into law, we took away Justice Thomas’ menu.

But we have to do more.

The Supreme Court is facing an unprecedented legitimacy crisis, and we have to restore order to the court by making changes. That means expanding the number of justices. It means limiting the time that justices serve to 18 years. It means instituting a code of ethics so that justices are held to the same standards that apply to every other federal judge and every other high-ranking government official. If you agree, will you add your name to my petition demanding that the court stop its unprecedented offensive against long-established rights?

This petition is intended to get the court’s attention. And my bill is intended to change how they do business. Thank you for joining me in this fight,

Hank Johnson
