I’m proud to have helped pass the Respect for Marriage Act

John, I’m overjoyed that the House of Representatives passed the Respect for Marriage Act on Thursday. Once President Biden signs the legislation, it will ensure federal protections for same-sex and interracial marriages.

To be clear, this is long overdue. It’s about time we put it into law that no American should face discrimination because of who they are or who they love. I’m proud to have voted in favor of this historic legislation.

As I prepare for my next term in Congress, I’m already looking ahead to how I can fight for more big victories for abortion rights, gun violence prevention, and more. Will you sign on to say you’re with me?

I was also disappointed – but not surprised – that most Republicans in both the House and Senate voted against this bill. Only 29 Republicans in the House had the courage to stand up for LGBTQ+ folks and their right to marry whomever they love. For a party that preaches limited government, I can’t fathom why they think this is the government’s business.

It’s crucial that Democrats keep up this momentum and build up grassroots support for these major issues. We have the opportunity to make major headway in the next few years, but it’ll take a groundswell of support from the public to make it happen.

John, I’m asking you to add your name to say you’re with Team Lucy in our efforts to guarantee equal rights and protections for all, regardless of race or sexual orientation.

Thursday was a big win, but we can’t take our foot off the gas pedal. Thanks for supporting this fight.

Onward,
Lucy McBath
