That’s why, today, I introduced the NYS Working Families Tax Credit

Dear Friend,

Last year, the Biden administration did something absolutely remarkable: through the American Rescue Plan, 2.9 million children were lifted out of poverty through the expanded Child Tax Credit, which provided monthly cash assistance to eligible families for six months.

That’s 2.9 million kids who weren’t going to bed hungry; 2.9 million kids whose parents could afford school field trips; 2.9 million kids who could afford new shoes.

I think about those children all the time.

And then, just mere months after the checks —  that made those dinners and field trips and school shoes possible — started coming, they stopped. Congress failed to extend the tax credit after near unanimous opposition by Republicans and West Virginia Democratic Senator Joe Manchin.

Like I said. I think about those children all the time.

That’s why, today, I introduced the New York State Working Families Tax Credit Act (NYS WFTC).

This new proposal will streamline the existing state child tax credit and earned income tax credit into a new program that increases the amount of support NY provides to working families up to $1,500 per child, provides for quarterly cash payments instead of just once a year, and expands full eligibility to all children in the state, unlike the expired federal program which excluded a third of all children from receiving full benefits.

If enacted, it is estimated that the new Working Families Tax Credit will reduce child poverty in New York by nearly 20%.

That’s 20% more dinners.

20% more field trips.

20% more school shoes.

20% more breathing room.

20% more freedom to just be a kid.

So read more about my bill, and sign up for updates. We have an incredible coalition across the state behind us — and we won’t stop until we win.

In solidarity,

Andrew
