December Newsletter Dear Friend, As the year concludes, it would be easy to focus on the difficulties our nation has faced. Grocery and gas prices have been at record highs. It will be more expensive to heat our homes this winter, and the southern border remains unsecure. However, as the year comes to a close, there is an invitation to pursue new beginnings. My Republican colleagues and I understand the issues our nation is facing and have made a commitment to pursue legislation to tackle these problems. Our plans include ideas to bring down the cost of living, reduce energy costs and increase energy security, and secure our border. Even though the past two years have been abnormal, with closed offices and mostly virtual meetings, regular order is in the process of being restored. There were more in-person meetings, we had five summer interns, and I had the privilege to welcome many constituents into our office. My staff has led roughly 50 Capitol tours for constituents from across the district since the Capitol reopened to the public in March. If you plan to travel to Washington D.C. in the coming year or are interested in an internship, please contact my office to see how we may assist you. I was also very active in the district this year, including a tour in August with our D.C. and Birmingham staffs. During the visit, we heard directly from Alabamians while visiting businesses, factories, and hosting a meet and greet in Chelsea. I have also had the pleasure of visiting 22 towns and cities in the district, nominating students to all four U.S. Service Academies, meeting with approximately 30 mayors from the district, and hosted numerous meetings with constituents. Additionally, our staff in the Birmingham office were hard at work. They visited 20 schools throughout the district and educated approximately 1500 students about the U.S. Constitution. The Birmingham staff also assisted constituents in hundreds of cases dealing with federal agencies. If you need help with a federal agency, please do not hesitate to call our office at (205) 968-1290. Finally, as I reflect on the past year, I would like to thank you for allowing me to represent Alabama’s 6th District in Congress. It is a blessing to serve such an incredible community, and I am grateful for this opportunity. I look forward to what will be accomplished in 2023. Sincerely, Gary Palmer In District Elder Justice Center of Alabama I enjoyed touring the Elder Justice Center of Alabama in Montevallo with Director Robyn James. This center is a model for the state and nation, providing outreach and education, caregiver support, training for professionals, and other services for older adults in our district. Irondale Chamber of Commerce It’s always a pleasure meeting with business leaders in the sixth district. Thank you to the Irondale Chamber of Commerce for inviting me to join them at their November luncheon and speak about the issues facing business leaders in our state. National Veterans Award Dinner This year was the 75th anniversary of Veterans Day, and Birmingham is home to the first and longest running Veterans’ Day parade in the nation. I was honored to attend this event to commemorate the importance of this day and those, like Raymond Weeks, who made it a reality. Because of his hard work, President Eisenhower officially changed Armistice Day to Veterans Day in 1954. On behalf of a grateful nation, we thank our veterans for all they have done for us and our freedoms. Shelby County Prayer Breakfast It was an honor to join other Shelby County residents at the annual prayer breakfast to pray for our community and our nation. Thank you for inviting me to this event. M&B Hangers Manufacturing Plant I had the pleasure to meet and talk with the management at the M&B Hangers manufacturing plant in Leeds. Thank you for inviting me to tour your state-of-the-art facility. In the News The past month was filled with many news items I think you will be interested in. I believe it is important you know where I stand on these critical issues. So, please read and listen to these articles and interviews at your convenience. You can also find them HERE on my website. Republican Policy Committee and Plans for the 118th Congress: I am grateful to receive the support of my Republican colleagues to be re-elected to serve as Republican Policy Committee Chairman in the 118th Congress. As we enter into the new Congress with the majority, the RPC plans to support legislation that tackles the increased cost of living, the energy crisis, and secure the southern border. You can listen to learn more about our plans using the links below. TV Interview – PBS NewsHour Print News – Yellowhammer Inflation and the Economy: When President Biden took office, he said that inflation would be temporary.
