Senator Warnock’s victory in Georgia last night brings to an end the 2022 election cycle, and reminds us all how important the work we do matters. The narrow margin of victory shows that every door knocked, every phone call placed, every text sent, and every dollar raised really does make a difference. And it also shows us more of what the next Congress will look like.
I have been back in Washington for the last few weeks, working to complete as much of the important policy work as we can this Congress and planning ahead for the next one. As you may have seen, with gratitude for the devoted and outstanding leadership of Speaker Pelosi and Leader Hoyer, House Democrats have elected new party leaders as these longtime leaders of our caucus have decided to serve in a different capacity and pass their knowledge on to a new generation of leaders. And it will be important, because we also know that Democrats will be the minority party in the House in the next Congress.
It bears repeating that House Democrats defied expectations in this critical midterm election, outperforming the polls and the pundits, and delivering the most successful midterm results for the party in the White House in decades. And it shows already in the confidence and optimism in our caucus.
With Democrats in control in the Senate and President Biden in the White House, there will certainly be Democratic leadership in Washington, D.C., and I remain optimistic about the things we can achieve. I also remain hopeful that the Republican majority in the House will work to find common ground on bipartisan legislation — as the Democratic majority in the House has done throughout my time in Congress.
But there is no doubt that the Republican leaders in the House intend to pursue an agenda that is at odds with what so many Americans, and so many TX-07 residents, want Congress to do. Among other things, they have called for a nationwide ban on abortion — something we already know all too well in Texas. They have pledged to undo some of the most meaningful legislation this Congress has passed. And they have made statements and proposals that undermine our support for Ukraine, our ally fighting for democracy and our democratic values.
Their dangerous proposals will not go unchallenged. I will continue to fight for the priorities of our district, our community, and our country. I will work to make sure that House Democrats regain the majority in the next election in two years, while holding the Senate and the White House. And I will continue to share with you here what I am seeing in Washington and what we can do together to move our country forward in the right direction. Before we know it, we will be campaigning again.
I am so thankful for the opportunity to represent TX-07 and to work with you to bring a little more Houston to Washington, D.C. Thank you for all you have done and will continue to do. It matters.
Together we can do anything,
