Dear Neighbor,
I’ve been hard at work this week wrapping up a number of projects before the end of the year, and I want to take a moment to update you on what I’ve been doing and how it will protect workers, deliver for families, and defend our fundamental rights.
First, I’m sure many of you saw the news about railroad workers’ possible strike. I was proud to help pass legislation to avoid this strike, while also passing legislation in the House to provide these railroad workers seven paid sick days..
Across the country, from railroad employees to grocery store clerks to child care providers, American workers deserve safe, supportive workplace environments and strong benefits. Only 25 percent of workers in the United States have access to paid family leave through their employers, and just 41 percent have access to personal medical leave through their employer-provided, short-term disability insurance. Avoiding the strike and helping labor unions achieve their priorities is a great first step, but my Democratic colleagues and I will keep fighting for policies like paid sick leave that help workers around the country thrive.
Another crisis facing too many families is the devastating humanitarian crisis in Haiti. This week, I led a letter urging the Department of Homeland Security to extend and redesignate Haiti for Temporary Protected Status (TPS). This crucial action would protect Haitian immigrants in the U.S. from deportation, and allow them to find work and support their families during this time of economic devastation and political violence in their home country. We have a thriving Haitian-American community here in Rockland and Westchester Counties, and I hope this action will bring some relief to family members and loved ones.
Earlier this week, I had the chance to call high school students applying to military service academies and congratulate them on receiving my nomination to attend these prestigious institutions. This is one of the great honors of my job as your Representative—helping shape the next generation of young leaders who have earned a highly sought-after opportunity. These young leaders, who aspire to a life of service to this country, will learn responsibility, leadership, and commitment.
As always, thank you for trusting me to be your champion in Congress. Democrats are fighting to deliver for families, protect and uplift workers, and defend our most fundamental rights. I am so honored to be in this fight on behalf of the community that raised me.
Sincerely,
Mondaire Jones
