John,
Every day, Republicans make it clear: They want to destroy Social Security and Medicare, and they won’t take ‘no’ for an answer.
In January, Republicans will hold a majority in the House of Representatives. And they plan to use that majority against President Biden the same way they did against President Obama―by taking the debt limit hostage and demanding cuts to Social Security, Medicare and other vital programs. Presumed Speaker-elect Kevin McCarthy worked to shore up his support among the Republican caucus before the election by promising to take the debt ceiling hostage.
And now, Mitch McConnell’s top lieutenant, ,Senator John Thune (R-SD), has joined McCarthy’s call.

We have one final month to raise the debt ceiling BEFORE Republicans can take it hostage to force cuts to Social Security and Medicare. We need to put pressure on Democrats to get this done now. Can you rush $7 to our emergency organizing campaign?
Let’s be clear: The debt ceiling doesn’t authorize any new spending on its own. It’s a technical authorization that allows the Treasury Department to issue the bonds that keep the global economy functioning, in accordance with the laws that Congress has already passed.
Our sources on Capitol Hill indicate that almost every Democrat in Congress is prepared to act. The holdup is familiar: Joe Manchin. Social Security Works has a full-time West Virginia organizer, applying pressure to Senator Manchin as he prepares for re-election in 2024.
Manchin may prefer a package that pairs raising the debt ceiling with Mitt Romney’s TRUST Act, which provides Congress with a fast-tracked vehicle to cut Social Security and Medicare.
Social Security Works is making it plain: Failure to raise the debt ceiling during this session of Congress puts Social Security and Medicare at risk. Rush a donation today!
Thanks,
Michael Phelan Social Security Works
