GOV. LUJAN GRISHAM READY TO INCREASE STATE SPENDING

Gov. Lujan Grisham has proposed a nearly $7.7 billion state budget that increases spending by $596 million. That's almost an 8.5% hike over current levels. It calls for a 4% salary increase for New Mexico teachers and more money for school districts with a large number of “at risk” students. The state needs to address crime, pension problems and one of the worst education systems in the nation. More money isn't the answer. Last year's education spending increase certainly didn't help New Mexico schools pass the grade.

Here's the story

ALBUQUERQUE'S RECORD MURDER RATE CRIES FOR SOLUTIONS IN 2020

Albuquerque is now ranked among the most dangerous cities in America. 2019 saw 82 murders in the Duke City, breaking its old 2017 record by 10 homicides.  Mayor Keller has failed the city despite more officers, a Metro 15 Operation, joint operations with State Police, and seeking more funding from the Roundhouse—none of these things are working. It's tough on a city when it's known for high crime. This is why it's time for real changes: tougher state laws that treat criminals like criminals and prevent early releases for dangerous suspects.

2020 NEW LAW SHOWS SOFT-ON-CRIME ATTITUDE IN NEW MEXICO

A new law that went into effect this past week would allow judges to expunge records of criminals. It states that people convicted of serious crimes like robbery, auto theft, and assault can ask a judge to expunge their criminal record. Is this what we want? Convicted criminals out there with cleaned records?

                                                    OTHER BRIEFS

  • Republican Brook Bassan was sworn in as Albuquerque's next District 4 Councilor on Friday. Good to see a tough-on-crime Councilor in there now.
  • RPNM offers its condolences to the family of Albuquerque Councilor Ken Sanchez, who died on New Year's Day.
  • Democratic State Senator Richard Martinez is scheduled to be sentenced today following his drunken driving and reckless driving convictions. He faces a maximum 6 months behind bars. He'll probably walk out that courtroom with probation. This will likely be a case of special treatment for a well-known lawmaker. And he's on the Judiciary Committee!!  Please, step down and do your constituents a favor.
