The Student Loan Payment Pause Has Been Extended

Dear Neighbor,

I hope this email reaches you and your family in good health and safety. I wanted to provide an update on the student loan payment pause and debt relief.

Earlier this year, President Biden announced his historic plan to cancel up to $20,000 in federal student loan debt for over 40 million people in America. Over 26 million people have signed up for student debt relief, and so far, 16 million applications have been approved by the Department of Education. Unfortunately, this relief is currently on hold due to frivolous lawsuits by Republican elected officials who are doing everything they can to stop it, even for their own constituents.

That’s why last week, the Biden Administration announced that it has extended the pause on federal student loan payments to no later than 60 days after June 30, 2023, while these lawsuits resolve. This extension is essential given the cruel efforts by Republican officials and far-right judges to halt critical student debt relief in the courts, despite President Biden’s clear legal authority and decisive action to cancel student debt.

The student loan payment pause has been a critical lifeline for workers and families across America struggling to make ends meet, and millions of families will sleep easier thanks to President Biden’s and Secretary Cardona’s action. I’m grateful for their partnership and commitment to canceling student debt, and to all of the borrowers and advocates who have organized and shared their stories.

Rest assured we won’t stop pressing until our constituents and families across the nation receive this critical relief the President promised.
