Help Accountable Tech hold social media giants to their word with an early Giving Tuesday donation →

Hi there,

I hope you had a great holiday weekend with loved ones.

With Giving Tuesday right around the corner (this Tuesday!), I wanted to share an update about how you can make an impact with Accountable Tech.

Accountable Tech Giving Tuesday

We have an ambitious goal of raising $5,000 in grassroots donations on Giving Tuesday to advance our mission of holding Big Tech accountable. In order to expand our work and effectively reign in social media monopolies, we need to step up our impact and fight back.

But before I ask you to make an early Giving Tuesday gift to support Accountable Tech’s work, let me explain what your support is enabling us to do – here are some of our impact highlights from this year:

Introducing the Banning Surveillance Advertising Act

— After months of working closely with the Accountable Tech team and partners, Rep. Anna Eshoo, Rep. Jan Schakowsky, and Sen. Cory Booker introduced the Banning Surveillance Advertising Act on January 18, 2022. This landmark bicameral bill would limit the ways that big tech companies can serve ads to their users, banning the use of surveillance advertising and mining your personal data altogether.

Passing bipartisan legislation to protect kids online

— On September 15, California Governor Gavin Newsom signed into law the California Age Appropriate Design Code Act, a first-of-its-kind measure to protect the safety of children and teens online. Accountable Tech advocated for the successful passage of this important legislation by uplifting youth voices, and driving calls, emails, and tweets to state legislators in support of the legislation.

Pressuring companies to stop advertising on Twitter

Elon Musk’s acquisition of Twitter has already eroded user safety and dialed up threats, harassment, and hate speech, so Accountable Tech is utilizing every tool at our disposal to stop his decimation of Twitter — recently calling on companies to stop advertising on the platform as a part of our #StopToxicTwitter campaign. Half of Twitter’s top 100 advertisers have stopped running ads on the platform in a major blow to the company’s revenue.

Team, this is just a small snapshot of the impact Accountable Tech has made in the Big Tech advocacy space in 2022. With your generosity, together we’ll be able to have an even greater impact in 2023.
