Important update: President Biden announced yesterday that the student
loan repayment pause will be extended another 6 months, until June 30th of
2023, instead of the original expiration slated for the end of 2022.^1

While it's wonderful to hear that payments will be on pause for several
more months, make no mistake, we are not out of the woods on the larger
fight against student debt. The extension was granted in part so that the
Supreme Court can hear Republican legal challenges to Biden’s federal
student debt relief, which granted each person up to $20,000 in student
loan relief.

The relief plan has faced several legal setbacks at the hands of the GOP,
who want to tie this up in court as much as possible to derail its
implementation. A federal appeals court in St. Louis is considering a
lawsuit by six different red states challenging the plan. And just a few
weeks ago, a Trump-appointed U.S. judge in Texas issued a new block to the
plan, claiming it usurps Congress’ power to make laws.^2 Republicans have
made themselves clear: loan holders shouldn’t receive relief.

The repayment pause has been a massive relief to student loan holders
across this country, but if Republicans succeed in challenging Biden’s
federal debt forgiveness plan, millions will still be left to claw their
way out of lifelong debt from impossibly high predatory loans.

special interests who are trying to stop student debt forgiveness?

As Alexandria said, “It was YOUR pushing, YOUR pressure, YOUR organizing
that got them to this point. It is up to us, and to you, to decide if we
are going to stop here, or if we are going to keep pushing."

Affordable education is a human right, and we will not let the GOP tell us
otherwise.

In solidarity,

Team AOC
