We are heartbroken by the senseless violence and lives lost on Saturday night after a gunman opened fire with an AR-style rifle in an LGBTQ+ nightclub in Colorado Springs. Club Q, like so many queer spaces, was a refuge for LGBTQ+ people to escape the hateful rhetoric, discrimination, and violence often found outside its doors.

- PFLAG National is a community of more than 350,000 members and supporters working to create a caring, just, and affirming world for LGBTQ+ people and those who love them. With hundreds of chapters across the country, PFLAG provides confidential peer support, education, and advocacy to LGBTQ+ people, their parents and families, and allies.
- Colectivo Intercultural TRANSgrediendo, based in Queens, provides legal, medical, and psychosocial assistance to trans and non-binary people through the implementation of community and educational support programs.
This tragedy is only deepened as it came on the eve of Transgender Day of Remembrance, which was created to commemorate the lives of those lost to anti-transgender violence.1 Alexandria and Team AOC stand in solidarity with the transgender community and the entire LGBTQ+ community.

1 - Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDOR) was started in 1999 by transgender advocate Gwendolyn Ann Smith as a vigil to honor the memory of Rita Hester, a transgender woman who was killed in 1998.
The vigil commemorated all the transgender people lost to violence since Rita Hester's death, and began an important tradition that has become the annual Transgender Day of Remembrance.
