We can’t let hateful words and violence continue to steal lives from our communities, John.
Today is Transgender Day of Remembrance—a designated time marking the end of Transgender Awareness Week to hold space and honor the memories of those who have tragically lost their lives to violent, cruel, anti-trans attacks.
While I want to focus on memorializing our community, my heart keeps coming back to the ongoing harm in our state. From school boards to the legislature, those who should be leaders for change and acceptance continue to threaten the future and safety of our transgender community in Texas.
I want to proclaim today that all of us deserve the freedom to be who we are—but even more than that, we all deserve to thrive. We will fight endlessly to make Texas a place where all transgender people are embraced and free to live as their full selves, including Black and Indigenous Transgender people of color—who represent 81% of the lives lost in the United States just in 2022.
Soon, we will be in the throes of another legislative session—and we know that cruel politicians will once again use their power to attack LGBTQIA+ Texans and the people who love them, with no regard for the devastation they cause along the way. I hope you’ll join me in honoring those we’ve lost by pledging to protect the transgender community, [[link removed]] [[link removed]] including kids.
