This week, I joined five of my Republican colleagues at COP27 (the 27th annual Climate Change Conference) where we were practically the only elected officials fighting for American energy independence and clean natural gas/carbon capture technology. I also introduced legislation that would hit the Mexican drug cartels where it hurts the most: their bank accounts.

WHY I WENT TO COP27
There’s only one reason I went to COP27 (the 27th annual Climate Change Conference), and that’s to do what Democrats won’t—advocate for real solutions to America’s energy crisis.

America has every opportunity to be energy independent, and it’s time we start focusing on that. We can’t rely on countries like China to offer us “clean” energy solutions while they continue to be the world’s largest emitter, with no concerted effort to decrease their own emissions. We don’t need to fool ourselves with the idea of a solar and wind only future, either. We need a real discussion on reliable solutions.
DECLARING WAR ON THE CARTELS
This week, I introduced H.R. 9312, the Declaring War on the Cartels Act. It’s long overdue that we take the cartels seriously. It’s time that we deter & target them the same way we do terrorists. That’s the only way we win.
 
Here are some highlights from the bill:

  • For cartel members convicted of various crimes, this bill increases their sentence anywhere from 10-20 additional years—solely for being a member of a transnational criminal cartel.
  • Allows asset forfeiture and prohibition of access to U.S. financial institutions for convicted cartel members. Captured money is designated to the CARTEL Fund which will then be distributed to CBP, ICE, and DEA.
  • Permits denaturalization and revocation of legal permanent residency status for people convicted of crimes on behalf of cartels.
  • Freezes foreign aid to countries that enable cartel activity in their territories.
  • Foreign individuals who are involved in or facilitate cartels may be sanctioned.

In summary, this bill hits the cartels where it hurts the most: their bank accounts.
