We’ve known for a long time that monopolies are trouble, but this week’s Ticketmaster debacle is causing major bad blood.

As Alexandria pointed out this week, Ticketmaster is a monopoly and its merger with LiveNation should never have been approved.

Ticketmaster needs to be reigned in. It’s time to break them up.

Alexandria has been very outspoken about the impact of corporate monopolies and how the consequences can be deadly. 

Take the national baby formula shortage in May of this year. The ENTIRE U.S. infant formula market is controlled by just three or four companies. That means that if something happens to one supplier, the entire supply is crippled. And that’s exactly what happened.

In addition, corporate monopolies are also one of the root causes of inflation. The consolidation of market power and the fact that the most basic goods – housing, food, etc. – are concentrated into oligopolies means that these huge corporations will price gouge just because they can. 

Whether it’s power companies like ConEd price gouging customers on their electricity bills, or Ticketmaster price gouging on concert tickets, the principle is the same: When one company controls the entire market, regular people have to fight for access, and are often shut out. 

We must hold Ticketmaster — and all corporations from Amazon to Facebook and Exxon — accountable. Send a message to the Department of Justice now.
