Hey John,

My name is Matthew Waguespack and I’m the Sportsmen Outreach Coordinator for Louisiana with Vanishing Paradise. Vanishing Paradise is a program of the National Wildlife Federation working to engage sportsmen to advocate for restoration of the Mississippi River Delta.

Vanishing Paradise and the month of November go hand-in-hand because our work often involves educating and informing sportsmen on the issue of coastal restoration in the duck blind and out on the water. November is a great month to be a sportsman in Louisiana because you get the opportunity to enjoy both hunting and fishing in the same outing, sometimes in the same spot. Migratory waterfowl like gadwalls, often times inhabit the same coastal ponds and potholes as redfish in south Louisiana providing ample opportunity for a Cajun cast and blast.

The fall season is one dedicated to family, friends, feasts, laughter and the outdoors. This is a great time for the modern hunter to partake in the festivities by preparing a wild game dish to share with friends and family this holiday season. If you don’t know any hunters but still want to try some wild game I encourage you to attend our Cook-off for the Coast on March 11.

Supporter Spotlight

On November 12, our friends at Restore or Retreat hosted a marsh grass planting on West Grand Terre. Located near Grand Isle, West Grand Terre is widely known for its productive summertime fishing spots, but often overlooked is its importance as the first line of defense against hurricanes entering the Barataria Basin. The island was recently restored with $100 million of NRDA funds, but the vegetation on the island was not part of the project. Supported by the National Wildlife Federation. Restore or Retreat was able to purchase and plant 8,000 smooth cord grass plugs and 500 black mangroves. Event photos can be found HERE!
