Speaker Nancy Pelosi announced today that she will not seek election as Democratic leader this coming year.
When I was elected to Congress in 2006, one of the first and most important votes I cast was to elect Speaker Pelosi as the first—and only—woman to serve as Speaker of the House. I am so proud, and grateful, to call her both a mentor and a friend.
Speaker Pelosi didn’t just break down barriers. She led the fight to pass historic legislation that’s helped millions of families, from the Affordable Care Act to the Bipartisan Infrastructure Bill . And we worked together to repeal Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell and end decades of injustice in the military.
She is tenacious, a tireless public servant, and deeply committed to our democracy and the American experiment.
In her farewell speech, Speaker Pelosi said that she never intended to go from homemaker to House Speaker. But she was called—like so many of us—to get off the sidelines and represent the people of her community in Congress.
We owe her a debt of gratitude. And now, it’s on us to carry her mantle forward. To elect more history-making women to Congress who will bring their unique perspectives and experiences to Congress.
Will you join me in honoring Speaker Pelosi’s legacy by making a contribution to Off the Sidelines today? Your donation will go directly toward electing the next generation of women leaders to Congress. [[link removed]]
Thank you,
Kirsten
P.S. I’ll leave you with this photo of Speaker Pelosi and me at one of my early Congressional Women’s Softball Games. A picture is worth a thousand words.
