Rebuilding History

More than 1,200 years ago, a group of Caddo people established a village west of what is now the city of Nacogdoches. The village was composed of beehive-shaped grass houses, 30 to 50 feet across. Pine and willow poles made the inner frame, which builders then thatched with switchgrass.

This year, with support from members of the Caddo Nation and other volunteers, we?ve been rebuilding a traditional grass house at Caddo Mounds State Historic Site. There are three more volunteer workdays this month?November 19, 25, and 26?during which we?ll tighten the frame and thatch it. Please join us in this heartfelt project!
